Well, yep, I’m ruined. For those who fly first class regularly I’m sure you are laughing, but I had big smiles going on underneath my KN95. After getting all my stuff situated in my VERY large area, we were offered champagne or orange juice. Juice for us (don’t want to mix alcohol with my little peach colored night night pill) and we were given a hot towel to wash our hands with. It was actually quite hot and had a slight lemon scent. After prayers for a safe journey our plane took off and we were promptly presented with cashews in a little white ceramic dish, a coke and a MENU. Yes…a menu. As we pondered our selections, our table was adorned with a mini white tablecloth and dinner soon followed. I had ratatouille as my starter followed by goat cheese ravioli and Guy had all things beef (his filet was quite delicious). Desert was a small cheese plate and ice cream. After this deliciousness, I decided to take half the normal dose of night night pill as I didn’t want to be too sleepy for breakfast, which I often sleep through, but…I mean come on…there’s a tablecloth involved. So as I laid my seat all the way back and adjusted the firmness of my tiny bed, I drifted off until my alarm woke me 4 hours later to take my sinus meds. I stayed awake as the flight attendants were beginning to move around and were prepping for breakfast. Not that I was disappointed, but breakfast was cold oatmeal with fruit, croissants with an enormous amount of butter, hot coffee and orange juice. Nothing hot besides the coffee, but it was served in a real mug, so that was a treat.
In Frankfurt we made our way over to terminal B via bus, very crowded bus, but our masks are once again our new best friends and we hopped on with the masses. Across from our gate was a Lufthansa lounge and we quickly found a comfy seat, a drink of water and snuggled in for a 3 hour nap. We were also in first class going from Frankfurt to Venice, but all that meant was we had a little water in our seat and they didn’t seat anyone in our row which was a 3 by 3. Hmm…Oh well, I slept for the one hour it took to get to Venice and was abruptly awakened by a horrid sinus headache. It happens occasionally, but this time it was quite intense. However, once we landed it eased and left me with no residual headache…so I’ll call that a win.
In Venice we purchased our one way tickets via shuttle boat to the closest stopping point before our hotel and pulled our suitcases a few blocks over the cobblestone sidewalks. Our hotel is a little boutique hotel on a side street and we completely walked past it before realizing we had gone too far. No big deal, I mean it isn’t like we are going on just a few hours of sleep and pulling large suitcases on bumpy sidewalks. ;) But upon entering we were greeted by the sweetest lady who lugged our luggage up the steps for us (she insisted) and a very friendly young man checked us in. Our room was just down from the office area and it is very nice. The air conditioning works, it’s super clean, ceramic floors and has the most lovely slippers.
Once we got settled in we decided not to shower and take a nap as it was already 3:30. So we brushed our teeth and headed out for a walk. It IS a Saturday night, so the entire area is bustling with people. We are on the side of Venice near the train station as it is close to where my class will be. If it is busy here, I can’t imagine what St. Marks Square is like tonight. We’ll not find out. We found a local shop with a sweet older lady making sandwiches and we grabbed some cokes and headed out to find a quiet as possible place along a canal and we sat down and ate our sandwiches as we people watched and smiled as the boats, filled with excited tourists, drifted by.
The weather is warm today and we are grateful for air conditioning. Back to the room we showered and are happily in bed now at 7pm. I’ll chew some melatonin gummies for good measure and I actually brought my own pillow from home. It fit in my suitcase…so I’m certain it will make nights in hotels a bit more like home. And yes, there is a slight chance it will be sacrificed at the end of the trip if I’ve bought too much stuff and need room in my suitcase. 🤣
Good night from Venice.
