Day 8

Ahh yes. A morning without an alarm and a glorious night’s rest. Hello Germany! Not to worry, we were up in time to make it to breakfast…which I was eagerly anticipating from hearing rave reviews from Guy and his mom from when they were here a few years ago. You know how sometimes people build things up and then you are like “yeah, that was cool, but you really built that up a bit too much … followed by 🙄”. Well, let me tell you…this breakfast was a dandy! I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m going to list some of the things quickly…so as not to bore you, but you really have to just see it with your own eyes. Coffee bar with all the cappuccino type selections, juice bar with all things fresh and squeezed, Tea bar…let me explain by saying there were jars of loose teas that you can combine to make your own blends, pretzels and all kinds of rolls and breads, pastries under warmers so the apple filling stays warm and yummy, 6 types of yogurts, dried fruits like dates, prunes, apples, etc., a variety of nuts, seeds and grains, eggs, sausages, house-made granola and every kind of cold cereal you can imagine, bacon, ham, salami, cheeses, an omelet bar, fresh fruits of all kinds, and last but not least, a fresh piece of honeycomb. Who does that? Like a gigantic slice of fresh honeycomb! Needless to say, I was overwhelmed and laughed when I came back to the table. Oh…and they had our name on a little reservation card and we will apparently set at the same table each day. Ok. No problem! I enjoyed every morsel and drank my entire carafe of hot coffee. Guy even headed back to the room without me, but since it was pouring rain outside, and I haven’t had “American style coffee” in a week, I stayed until I finished every drop.

Today is a rest day, which works out because I’m so full I can’t move. We sat in the room and read with the door open and within a short time the sun popped out and we ventured outside to peruse the little pop up market in the street below as well as all the shops. Guy gave me a tour of the neighborhood and I meandered in and out of I think every single shop. There were some lovely things and I’m really enjoying this sweet town with the spectacular views. I did make a purchase today from a darling older German man who has a little wood shop right in the town and hand-makes everything in his shop. There are wood shavings all over the floor, but I’m certain it’s for show, and his woodworking equipment is out for you to see. So IF these items were not handmade, he is one heck of a marketing expert! It was very simple art but he incorporated his designs to flow with the natural designs within the wood. I got a bit lazy with my speech and didn’t ask the owner if he spoke English first (as it seems that every here does), and I turned to him and in English said “May I pick this up?”. He replied in German that he only speaks Deutsche, but a young girl standing nearby interpreted for me and he looked at me and said “ja ja” I could pick it up, but I’m certain his comments immediately back to the girl were something to the affect that I was presumptuous to think he spoke english. Totally my bad and to him I would have liked to have replied (after an apology) “that’s fair” but it’s just a hunch that was the conversation that took place. With an apologetic tone I said “danke schon” after I made my purchases and then made my way out of the tiny shop slightly embarrassed but excited about the little wooden treasures I’ll be bringing home. I should have brushed up on my German basics before the trip.

We came back to the room to relax for a moment and then headed out for lunch. We ate outside at a very cute Biergarten and Guy ordered pork schnitzel and I ordered cheese spatzel with a side of kraut. All of our food came quickly and we sat and enjoyed the sun that had once again made an appearance. The clouds are still low in the mountains, but gives everything a very Hollywood movie moody type feel. The best thing for me is the glorious high of only 63 degrees. It’s definitely feeling like fall here.

After lunch we headed back to our room where we sat on the couch with the door open listing to the people down below. I scrolled through Facebook while Guy took a short nap. I’m not sure the day can get much better but I do know that supper won’t be much. Between breakfast and our lunch…I’m still stuffed.

We set out for a little walk to the grocery store and got some water and cokes for our room. Guy wanted a little something for his supper so we went downstairs and we sat outside again by the little fire pit and I had a hot chocolate while Guy ate some French onion soup. He was a little bit envious of my selection last night, so now he is satisfied that he has had his own bowl. We sat outside for at least an hour just visiting and talking about future trips, work and life. The weather was so lovely and we were just soaking it all up.

Today’s blog is short and sweet and tomorrow promises to be a repeat of today and I can’t wait. Enjoying the relaxation and cooler weather. THIS feels like vacation! Photos today are just random shots around the town.
