After a second look at the breakfast spread this morning I missed a few things. There was a vegetable station where you could cut up your own vegetables and create your own juice and an antipasto section with olives and all kinds of marinated treats as well as a selection on spreads for your toast. One section of jellies of all kinds and then another of small little tins with savory spreads. I’ll get a better look at that tomorrow. The scrambled eggs today had a bit of onion in them and they were wonderful. I tried not to overdo, but it’s hard when there is SO MUCH to choose from. Best. Breakfast. Spread. Ever.
So it’s raining again. Quite a bit actually. So we looked at the future radar and saw that there would be a window to walk between 1 and 2pm. So before that time we walked around the shops again looking for perhaps a sweater, but didn’t really find what we were looking for or something we couldn’t live without I should say. But was fun to just peruse again.
We went to the room to put another layer on and headed out for our walk around a wooden walkway we could see up on the hillside. It was a steep walk up and when we took a minute to catch our breath I turned around and saw SNOW on the mountain tops! It’s so crazy because you can see the exact line where the temperature for rain ends and the snow begins. Like a line drawn across it. I have to say we were pretty giddy to see snow. But our walk was lovely and we stopped for occasional photo ops and took our time. Guy stopped and said “do you hear that?”…rain. We were covered by trees at that moment, but we did get a bit wet before we made it back to the hotel. We had rain ponchos with us, but it wasn’t quite enough to crack them out. Back at the room we rested and warmed up and started thinking about lunch.
We decided to do what we normally do at home and that is a big afternoon lunch. It was about 2:30 and we grabbed our umbrella and ventured over to the Zum Bier Adam, a restaurant just around the corner from our hotel that Guy had been to before. It’s been there since 1938, so I can hardly imagine all the history that passed by this place throughout the years. The servers were older ladies, one in traditional clothes and one not. The place was hopping so they were really working hard. She gave us German menus, but Guy pulled the website up and we translated. Then when she came to take our order and realized we only spoke English, she offered us English menus, but we were good. We ordered and sat back and warmed up in the quaint little restaurant. (The high temperature never left the 40’s today). I ordered Adam’s Goulash and potato pancakes with apple sauce. Sounds nice and German, right?? Guy ordered the schnitzel of course with French fries. Let me tell you…the goulash was the bomb and I was really glad I chose it. Guy’s schnitzel was ever better than yesterday’s. When our server came to get our plates, there was still food on them but we assured her it was only because it was “too much”. Guy got out the credit card to pay and she said “cash only”. Luckily he had enough in his pocket, but when she came back to our table to settle up, she repeated our items and wrote it all on a piece of paper and did the math on the spot. You just don’t see that anymore!
After lunch we searched out an ATM as we thought we’d get a few more Euros and walked over to the bank across the way from the hotel. It was easy peasy so with our pockets filled with some crispy new euro bills we walked to the information center since it was next door and after perusing the brochures we went back to the room. We had to close the balcony door as it was quite chilly and we watched it rain and felt our eyelids getting heavy. There was maybe a nap. Guy read and I surfed around on my phone as we enjoyed a lazy afternoon listening to the rain and feeling quite cozy in our room. I really needed these past few days to relax. They’ve been wonderful.
This evening we stayed in a watched a movie on my ipad and about 8:30 Guy started thinking about food. Neither one of us was really hungry, but figured we’d be hungry in the middle of the night. He said a pretzel sounded really good. I told him to go down and ask! We KNOW there are pretzels in the building because they have them at breakfast! So we went down to the pizza place downstairs and asked. Sure enough! He comes back to the room with a big smile on his face holding two warm pretzels. And just like that you have the end to another great day.
Tomorrow we’ll say “auf wiedersehen Berchtesgaden” after we eat our last fabulous Edelweiss breakfast and pack up to head to Garmisch. It is about 2.5 hours from here and we’ll be in no hurry, so we’ll just enjoy the drive and look forward to exploring someplace new! Forecast is for rain still, so we’ll see how that goes. Luckily it’s off and on, so it doesn’t spoil the entire day. We’ve saved our warmest clothes for this next spot…highs look to be in the mid to low 50s! Feels like winter compared to Venice, but it sure was fun to see snow at the top of the mountains today. Hoping we see more white peaks on our roadtrip tomorrow.
Night!
